Food & Beverages | Since 2012 we've been spreading the love for jams, preserves, and hot sauces that elevate the everyday. Our Founder Melanie Mulherin loves distinctive and bold flavours. From her grandparents' grocery store and dinner parties to the family restaurant, her passion for food started early on. After she married a chef, her mother-in-law taught her the art of preserving, and so our story began. Wanting to create something new with a great balance of spice and flavour, Spicy Tomato Savoury Spread was born. This next-level replacement for ketchup on your favourite burger became our first product and best seller. She started selling it at the local Farmers' Markets to rave reviews. Building a jam factory on a small island is no easy feat, but Salt Spring Island is a special place filled with resourceful and creative people. As the company grew, Melanie recognized the opportunity to provide meaningful employment and allow locals to remain connected to family, nature, and community without leaving the island. Our rural west coast setting continues to inspire how we grow as a company and the impact we have. From Melanie's home kitchen and handwritten labels, eleven years later we still make everything in small batches with quality ingredients. The Jam Factory now includes a full-scale production kitchen, retail shop, tasting room, and a growing team of more than a dozen amazing folks. Our full collection of savoury, spicy, and sweet creations are perfect for pairing with cheese and charcuterie or spreading liberally on your favourite sandwiches. Chocolate | Drew and I have always savoured chocolate, but we came to making it in a roundabout way. From Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, we’ve spent our careers working with farmers in developing countries which was just about the best job in the world. We learned much, helped a bit, and gained a huge respect and affection for people who make food, from grower to artisan. Life was a tad spartan, but it was considerably livened up by occasional indulgences of chocolate. When it was time to leave Kabul, it just seemed natural that we’d pursue chocolate making as it lets us connect with farmers, while learning how to craft something we love. We started out casually; a private hobby really. Friends wanted our bars and we experimented more. From there, chocolate became a passion. Soon enough, some insanely talented people joined us, considerably raising our game in the process. Together we’ve become crazily obsessed with making the best possible chocolate we can. There’s so much to learn in chocolate; get the right beans – do the right thing – and the flavours unlocked are incredible. Rush it, and it can be a disaster!
